What Is a Context Hint?

The targeting instruction you write for a ChatGPT ad — and the single biggest lever on whether your ad ever gets shown.

A context hint is the piece of text you write to tell ChatGPT who your ad is for and what situation it belongs in. It's the ChatGPT Ads equivalent of the keywords you'd bid on in a search campaign — except instead of matching exact text, it describes the audience, the intent, and the moment a buyer is in, and ChatGPT decides whether a given conversation is relevant by meaning, not by string match.

Why context hints exist

ChatGPT Ads doesn't have a keyword auction. There's nothing to bid on, no exact-match, broad-match, or phrase-match setting to choose. Instead, every ad group carries one context hint, and OpenAI's system compares the meaning of that hint against the meaning of the live conversation to decide whether your ad is relevant enough to show. Get the hint right and your ad reaches people mid-decision. Get it vague and it competes for nothing in particular — and simply doesn't show.

Why writing one well matters this much

In keyword search, a mediocre keyword still gets some traffic — it's in the auction, even if it converts badly. A context hint doesn't have that fallback. If it's too generic ("people interested in software"), it doesn't clearly match any specific conversation, so it rarely triggers at all. The hint isn't a nice-to-have piece of copy — it's the entire targeting mechanism.

What a context hint is made of

Every strong context hint answers three questions in one or two sentences:

  • Audience — who, specifically? Not "businesses," but "solo founders and small agencies" or "HR leaders at growth-stage companies."
  • Intent — what are they trying to do? Comparing options, troubleshooting a problem, evaluating a switch.
  • Situation — what's the specific context they're in? A constraint, a trigger, a moment (e.g. "without hiring a bookkeeper," "hiring into a country with no local entity").

A real example

Example context hint
comparison

Solo founders and small agencies evaluating AI tools to automate client invoicing, payment reminders, and late-fee tracking without hiring a bookkeeper.

Audience (solo founders, small agencies) · Intent (comparison) · Situation (evaluating invoicing automation, without hiring a bookkeeper) — all in one sentence.

Notice what it doesn't do: it doesn't name the product, and it doesn't list keywords. It describes a person in a moment. That's what ChatGPT is matching against.
