What Are Context Hints in ChatGPT Ads?

The ad-group signal that describes where your offer may be relevant — and how it works alongside creative, landing-page, bid, and eligibility signals.

A context hint is descriptive text attached to a ChatGPT ad group. It tells OpenAI the conversations, needs, topics, products, or situations where the ads in that group may be relevant. Unlike an exact-match keyword, it guides matching by meaning and does not guarantee delivery in a particular conversation.

What are context hints in ChatGPT Ads?

OpenAI describes context hints as ad-group-level descriptions of conversations, topics, keywords, products, services, needs, or situations where an ad may be relevant. They add context beyond the title and copy; they are not exact-match rules and do not guarantee that an ad will appear in a particular conversation.

Why context hints exist

ChatGPT conversations express intent in sentences and follow-ups rather than short search queries. Context hints let an advertiser describe a coherent conversation theme without relying on exact, phrase, or broad keyword match types. They are one relevance input alongside the ad title, copy, landing page, bid, eligibility, and other campaign settings.

Why writing one well matters this much

A generic hint such as "people interested in software" adds little information beyond the creative, while an over-constrained buyer profile can exclude useful variations. Strong hints are specific enough to describe a real need and broad enough to cover the different ways people express that need. They improve the clarity of the ad group, but they do not determine delivery by themselves.

What a context hint is made of

ContextHint recommends that a focused hint answer three practical questions:

  • Audiencewho, specifically? Not "businesses," but "solo founders and small agencies" or "HR leaders at growth-stage companies."
  • Intentwhat are they trying to do? Comparing options, troubleshooting a problem, evaluating a switch.
  • Situationwhat's the specific context they're in? A constraint, a trigger, a moment (e.g. "without hiring a bookkeeper," "hiring into a country with no local entity").

A real example

Example context hint
comparison

Solo founders and small agencies evaluating AI tools to automate client invoicing, payment reminders, and late-fee tracking without hiring a bookkeeper.

Audience (solo founders, small agencies) · Intent (comparison) · Situation (evaluating invoicing automation, without hiring a bookkeeper) — all in one sentence.

The example names a buyer, intent, use case, and constraint without becoming a keyword list. OpenAI also allows useful product or service context when it adds information beyond the ad title and copy.

What a context hint does not control by itself

A well-written hint cannot override account eligibility, policy review, geography, campaign dates, budget, or bid. OpenAI also evaluates the landing page, ad title, and copy. Treat the hint as an important relevance signal inside that wider system, not as a delivery guarantee.
